In Grades 1 and 2 this semester we have used a project based approach to teach Design Thinking.
Grade 1
In 1A and 1B this semester, the children have completed some important work on recycling. Therefore, when it came to the children’s Design Thinking work, we wanted the students to engage in a practical project that allowed the students to put their learning into action.
The students brought their rubbish in to school and with Mr Yee’s help, the students were able to turn everyday rubbish items into something valued and new – a process called 'Up-cycling'. The students' developed technical skills as they created:
Wind chimes
Sun catchers
Marble Mazes
Trophies
Through a fun and engaging project, the children learned the value of recycling.
Grade 2
In 2A and 2B the children have been developing their knowledge of the world by learning about different countries and cultures within Asia. In Design Thinking the children started this project by creating 3-D maps that listed the main countries in this region and the main features of these countries. In this way, the children could then reinforce this knowledge during their regular Topic lessons in class.
By working in this project based approach, the Grade 1 and 2 students were able to focus on each topic throughout the week and see the process through; gaining an enormous sense of achievement at the end!
